HotS Zurvan by PhillGonzo HotS Zurvan by PhillGonzo
Starcraft 2: Zurvan
Modeled by Phill Gonzales, final texture pass by Ted Park!
Animated by Jay Hathaway and Chip Carle

Zurvan was the last thing I did on HotS and took over 3 months to complete (modeling+texturing+animation). His creation began with a rough sketch by Trevor Jacobs on a whiteboard which showed a really distinct head he had in mind for a mission mechanic. Mr.--Jack then did a multitude of concepts exploring what Zurvan's entire body looked like to match Trevor's head design. All of the concepts explored many different ideas which were cherry-picked to be used on the game model. Some more dynamic ideas had tentacles coming out of the back and underneath Zurvan instead of legs.

Since his scale in game is gigantic, Zurvan had many details that needed modeling and potential design ideas were up in the air for his role in HotS. We intended this model to be usable for multiple phases of an encounter. Only once Ted's texture was well underway did we come to understand his resemblance to H. J. Waternoose from Monsters Inc.

MAYBE! There are some very crazy ideas being kicked around. They're a while off if we decide to try them out!

I definitely think some sort of Primal Zerg should be part of HotS! Perfect set up for a warrior hero (which there are no warrior SC characters currently). This guy would be really fun. I can already imagine him being a go-to character choice for a good body blocker like Diablo and Stitches are. :D

...Only if someone could've made a more 'angular' ultralisk...
...Also that Protoss Dark prism colossus can become a Reaper-unit, which'll replace mothership if you choose 'Dark' ascension path, can be an idea?

very cool...though from my first impression playing the game, i thought primal zerg looked very draconian as opposed to insectoid, especially zurvan and yagdra. im just curious as to how you guys arrived to the design we see now.

The designs were really focused on exploring how beastly the Zerg were before the Swarm reduced their physical appearance to essential fighting components. We kept exploring the idea of "what did the Zerg look like before they were a army of emaciated skeletons?".

Question, as you mentioned, this was a concept, and then built upon by combining loads of ideas in the office. Do you think you could have created a monster as well thought out and designed without all the collaborated ideas from the team? :)

I don't think I could have made Zurvan from scratch, the collaboration made a huge difference.

LOVED Zurvan and the other Primal Zerg, it's nice to finally see some real color differation (is that a word? hmm.) with a faction like this. This is inspiring! Lost my mind when we first see the Primal Zerg! ...nerdgasm.

In the game, what impressed me most about this bastard was his sheer sense of scale. Killing him gave me fond flashbacks of god of war.

I do have a 3 questions though.
Did The tentacles come out of the legs or do the legs expand out into tentacles regardless where did all that extra expanding mass come from?
Also are those wings on it's back or are they just reminiscent of wings.
Did zurvan actually have the ability to fly since he could be classified near the same level as the overmind who could interplanetary travel.

I really liked how zurvan was a sort of a dragon / kraken zerg boss. The giant attacking tentacles and dragon upper features gave him a legendary feel.

I was surprised the main arms didn't attack at all. Though the lightning out of the mouth was a nice "dragon breathing fire touch".

For the zerg given that the evolutions are so varied it would be sweet for the lore to have an "Essence Record" that shows "Evolution Origins". Like what "assimilation changes" led up to the current prominent Zerg like Zurvan. Reading the Zerg essence lineage would be fascinating.

The tentacles are a cheap trick in a way, we don't make a very good effort explaining them since we ran out of time to dedicate to the artistic support of Zerus.

The wings on his back are more like Stegosaurus plates, they're mainly used to show off the energy he has stored in himself.

All other lore questions I can't really speak for, so much is left unknown!

I feel like Zerg origins could have been handled better, but I liked Zurvan's character.

**SPOILER ALERT**

It wasn't a surprise to kill him in the end, and gave no illusions to Zerg evolution; kill or be killed. Not so much a betrayal, as much as it was a next step. Only Kerrigan thought she was being crossed.

(sigh) your going to hate me for this, but....

I thought the story was bad, and even stupid at times.

The biggest problam was Zerus. Everything was bad. Wasn't the homeworld of the Zerg supposed to be very, very far away from the humans and Protoss? By making it so near, you make the universe that much smaller.

The way the Primal Zergs talked was just really bad: "We kill! We eat! We be become strongggerrrr! This is the way of the Zerg!" Et cetera.

The way you randomly add the super Zurvan/Ancient One for a boss battle is also bad. It does nothing but open up a can of worms, and creates plotholes. Like why didn't the Overmind use the Ancient One?

And the way you randomly bring back Alexi Stukov from the dead was just.... just.... yeah. It was pointless having him back; you didn't even make a big deal out of it. He didn't sound or even looked the same from Brood War. It was pointless.

The idea of the primal zerg talking isnīt bad man, i mean in the lore they are created with purity of essence wich dont mean that they are retards or something like that. Beside not all of them can talk, just the pack leaders wich are suposed to ve hig evolutionated beings, I think that if itīs anny problem with zerus its the short number of missions

I don't disagree with some of the points you've made, and it's ok to dislike the story.

Zerus is a big chunk of story told in a very small amount of time. I think more justice could have been done on Zerus to realize the Zerg origin we wanted to show, but details like that get swept away pretty easily. Is it more important to keep Kerrigan moving forward or stopping to talk about Zerg? We have to keep Kerrigan going.

Showing a sense of galactic scale in the Starcraft universe isn't something that is easily done in a game. The idea that Zerus is so local to the other races isn't intentional. Showing travel time and scale is a detail that not everybody appreciates. Many players feel that "this is the future, space travel is trivial" and we have to find that middle ground.

The Primal Zerg speach was heavy handed, I agree. We didn't have time to show the Primals stealing essence and evolving, so we had to overstate the point through dialogue.

Zurvan was always intended to be the final boss of Zerus. Many things got cut along the way, like the presence of multiple Ancient ones. The Overmind didn't use the Ancient One because the Swarm Zerg were built on Char using the essence of abducted Primals. The main point of the Primals is showing the pure genetic foundation of the Zerg Race's evolution abilities.

I have no insight to why Stukov returned, I was off the project by then.
