The Protoss Obelisk was created as a result of Starcraft 2's unlimited selection. The downside to unlimited selection was its interference with micro management. Early playtests resulted in little base management and massive armies being built up and attack-moved across the map.

Design decisions were made to improve combat roles of the units so there was incentive to position and coordinate attacks more skillfully than an attack-move command. Base micromanagement was encouraged with the addition of the Protoss Obelisk, Terran M.U.L.E., and the Zerg Queen.

The Obelisk had a variety of abilities, but the most notable was Chrono Boost, which would accelerate the production of whatever building it was cast upon. The base micromanagement mechanics went over well, but the Obelisk was stripped of its powers (those were given to the Nexus) and sent into the void of lost art. Luckily it returned during the 3rd Zeratul mission as an objective building.
