Starcraft 2: Zerg Compare SC1 - SC2
Modeled by Phill Gonzales, final texture pass by Ted Park
Animated by Jay Hathaway

This was just for fun! The graphical improvements between games are marginal. The updated visuals are based on the great concept work of Mr.--Jack: [link]

You know, I always admired the low-res "pixel-art" of the original SC. It really let my imagination do the drawing, and so I thought of it as being more realistic than it really was at the time. Probably a reason why pixel art is popular these days, especially in indie games.

I miss the Guardian, it is my favorite flying zerg unit

Oh man, I was way off on those original units. I thought the giant color streaks on the Devourer were eyes at first, then I thought they were antenna. As for the Queen...I just don't know. First time I ever made one my first thought was, "What?" I eventually settled on the thought they were the result of a plastic bag and a spider fused together.

Heehee, this happens to me too, the sprites are easy to interpret differently!

It's a real shame the Devourer didn't make it into the final game - I mean, sure, I never made much use of them myself, but artistically what you have here is not only brilliant in and of itself, but conceptually, as a "next gen" Mutalisk, it is absolutely perfect.

I agree, there is a missed opportunity here, BUT, we still have an expansion left and who knows what could happen.

I kind of notice that at the Starcraft 1 remake campaign, hell yeah! :D But still, I yet to see Dragoons, Cerebrates & Defilers. :)

But one thing that bugs me is that if only the person should model the Guardian when HotS already provided the model from Zerus itself. I hope I'm wrong on this one.

I may be reading into your comment wrong, but these models aren't for the Starcraft 1 remake campaign, they were built for SC2: Heart of the Swarm.

The Queen was never used, the Devourer only appears as a background unit, and the Guardian was retextured for Zerus.

Oh, interesting. :o Didn't expect that, I thought it was some magic compatibility, but then I realized it's a real campaign, I love to hear the game sites like Gamespot will do interviews with them and even may receive praises from Blizzard. But today, this was long time ago when they finished the final version somewhere in 2012, so I guess it's safe to play them. :) Now I only need to get it to work of course, I serious can't wait how to look for such as the Zerg units I love to see the most which are no longer in the last game.

I I mean I said the people who make the remake shouldn't re-model the Guardian when the Zerus campaign already provided it for them.

So anyway, I'll look into those remakes, this could be fun! :D

Those are some really neat models. Did you get a hold of them, or are you one of those working on that StarCraft + Brood War remake for StarCraft II?

While the Guardian made its way to HotS as Primal Zergs, why we can't use them as Swarm Zerg? why not re-introduce them to the swarm?

What happened to the Devourer and the Old Queen? Discarded like the rest?

The Devourer and the Old Queen were overlooked, which is unfortunate that they weren't included in the Zerg Campaign.

It's understandable! The constant criticism we received while making Wings of Liberty was the new high definition art wasn't gritty like Starcraft 1. Starcraft 1 wasn't gritty, it was low resolution and pixelated!!!

I had a nerdgasm when I heard about the guardian XD

So I'm guessing the primals found the guardian's trait when the swarm visited Zerus and they started producing them OR you guys changed the guardian from originally being in the swarm into a primal

:iconphillgonzo:
PhillGonzo Featured By Owner Apr 2, 2013  Professional Digital Artist
The simple answer is there wasn't time to make completely new art, so the decision was made to repaint the Guardian so the Primal's had more creatures in their army.

So most of the things that lacks in HOTS was because of time constraint, right?

i like the origional devourer and guardian better. the devourer looked better without all the cartoony spikes. it also had 2 eyes and little arms. again the guardian had a better head in sc 1 and less goofy spikes
